Unlock You!
Bad Ape partnered with Equimundo and Next Gen Men to bring a new conversation about masculinity into Roblox. Unlock You! transformed social-emotional learning into a cooperative gaming experience, challenging young players to break out of rigid gender stereotypes through play.
The Challenge
Outdated ideas of masculinity continue to shape how boys think, behave, and relate to others.
Equimundo's “Man Box” research highlights how rigid gender norms limit emotional expression, discourage vulnerability, and reinforce harmful stereotypes. The challenge was to translate this evidence-based framework into an interactive experience that would resonate with young people aged 9-18 without feeling instructional or moralizing.
To drive meaningful impact, the message needed to exist where young audiences already spend their time. That meant meeting them inside Roblox and transforming reflection into something playable.
The Solution
Bad Ape developed Unlock You!, a cooperative two-player obby designed to turn social-emotional learning into gameplay.
Grounded in the “Man Box” framework, the experience converts abstract gender pressures into symbolic, interactive challenges. Players work together to move through obstacle courses representing outdated norms, self-esteem pressures, and emotional isolation. Progress depends on communication, collaboration, and mutual support, reframing strength as connection rather than dominance.
By embedding empathy, vulnerability, and teamwork into the core mechanics, Unlock You! creates a space where young players can question stereotypes through action, not instruction.
