Rage Fighters
Bad Ape partnered with Ryzo Studios to bring Rage Fighters to Roblox as an interactive extension of the studio's animated short film, Release the Beast. The experience transformed the film's emotional themes into gameplay, giving boys practical regulation tools inside a competitive combat world.
The Challenge
Release the Beast explores the internal emotional storm many boys experience but struggle to express. Ryzo Studios wanted to extend the film's impact beyond passive viewing and into an interactive format that would actively build emotional skills.
The challenge was to translate the film's themes into a fighting game that felt authentic to Roblox players. It needed to resonate with boys who gravitate toward combat mechanics, while embedding evidence-based emotional regulation skills in a way that felt empowering rather than instructional.
The experience also had to bridge two worlds: cinematic storytelling and platform-native gameplay, creating a cohesive ecosystem between film, game, and community.
The Solution
Bad Ape developed Rage Fighters, a melee combat experience that reframes emotional regulation as a competitive advantage.
Set inside the EmoDojo and themed combat zones such as Rage Storm and the Toxic Zone, players battle enemies representing inner critics, emotional triggers, and overwhelming thoughts. Core regulation skills become tactical mechanics: Pause creates a force field, Breathe restores health, Cool Down shifts environmental dynamics, and Connect enables cooperative advantages.
Narrative elements from the companion animated short film Release the Beast were integrated directly into the game, with characters, environments, and music bridging story and gameplay. Hidden notebook pages reveal the protagonist's emotional journey, grounding mechanics in real-world skill-building.
By embedding vulnerability and self-regulation into high-intensity combat, Rage Fighters transforms emotional growth from a lesson into a power-up — making strength synonymous with control, awareness, and connection.
